How do I study LLC?

The B.A. minor subject "Languages, Literatures, Cultures" comprises three components:

1. Two Basic Modules P1 and P2 (obligatory):

P1: in the winter semester: two compulsory lectures: "Introduction to Literature Studies" (3 ECTS) & "Introduction to Linguistics" (3 ECTS) = 6 ECTS.

P2: in the summer semester: two compulsory lectures: "Introduction to Culture and Media Studies" (3 ECTS) & "Introduction to Ancient & Premodern Languages and Cultures" (3 ECTS) = 6 ECTS.

P1 and P2 add up to 12 credits.

2. First Elective Module: you choose from WP1-5 (i.e. either WP1 or WP2 or WP3 or WP4 or WP5); it is recommended to start this module in your first semester.

WP2-5 allow for a fairly free combination of classes of all contributing subjects.

In WP1 'Languages'; you have two options:

  • You study one language up to an advanced level; this comprises four levels: basic level 1 & 2 ('Grundstufe 1 & 2') and advanced level 1 & 2 ('Aufbaustufe 1 & '2) at 6 credits for each level.
  • You study two languages (in succession) at 12 credits each; this comprises either basic level 1 & 2 or advanced level 1 & 2 for each language.
  • The classes are organized in a consecutive manner (basic level 1 & 2; advanced level 1 & 2). Except for English*, no previous knowledge of the respective language is necessary or presumed. From basic level 2 onwards, knowledge to the amount of the preceding class is presumed; details are regulated by the contributing disciplines.

*Although this is not mandatory for LLC students, it is recommended to participate in the so-called C-Test during the suitability test for English Studies (B.A. major subject). More information can be found on the pages of the Department of English and American Studies.

The choice of the Elective Module is final and irrevocable as soon as you register for an exam in this module; you continue the Elective Module until the end of the 4th semester, upon which you should have achieved 24 credits.

We recommend a workload of 6 ECTS credits per Module per semester and a total workload of 12 ECTS per semester.

3. Second Elective Module, i.e. one of the four remaining modules (cf. above); it is recommended to start this module in your third semester.

  • Again, the choice of the respective Elective Module is final and irrevocable as soon as you register for an exam in this module; this module is continued in the 4th and 5th semester.
  • We recommend a workload of 6 ECTS per Module in the 3rd and 4th semester and a  workload of 12 ECTS in the 5th semester (in which you complete your second Elective Module).

Based on this, you arrive at the following schedule:

(In this example WPs 2 & 3 were chosen, you can, of course, choose any two Elective Modules you fancy. The succession of course types in WP3 is only one of many possbilities.)
